Note Thank god this is the only time they introduce Q to the universe of DS9, and it’s got Vash a character I couldn’t care less about!

Note Wow, really bad “Brain and brain, what is Brain”? episode.  Every season seems to have at least one of these. My least favorite DS9 episode

Season 1, Episode 10: The Nagus

Relationship Ferengi Story
Note This introduces us to the Grand Nagus, and in the final episode of DS9, there is sub-plot wrap up involving the Ferengi and Quark, and Rom, so if you want to know every thing give this a watch.  Besides I really like Wallace Shawn as the Grand Nagus!

Relationship Dominion War
Note This episode begins the backstory on “who” is Odo, and what is his background.  I was actually surprised by how much back story is given in this episode, hints of what the Founder’s are like, even beginning to lay the foundation for why they act the way they act.  I give the writers credit, I can’t think of anything that out and out violates the foundation laid in this episode in later episodes.

Season 1, Episode 12: Battle Lines

Relationship Emissary Plotline, Bajoran Story
Note Here is where they get rid of Kai Opaka.  I remember hearing a rumour at the time that the actress they had picked for Opaka, didn’t seem able to do the character the way they had originally intended to use her, so they wanted to get rid of her, without killing her off, in case they ever needed her for some fill-in.  Turns out they didn’t, we won’t see her again, BUT her leaving the Kai position (think Bajorian Pope) opens the vacuum that moves so much forward on both the Emissary and Dominion War story arcs

Note I almost gave this a Deep Background because it begins to introduce the relationship between Dr. Bashir and O’Brian.  A very important relationship in later episodes, that organically grows from this starting point.

Relationship Dominion War, Cardassian Story
Note This story is recommended only because it helps to lay a good understanding on the relationship between Bajorians and Cardassians and the deep tie between their cultures and fates.  Later on the Cardassian culture will be a MAJOR plot point for the Dominion War so this episode begins to build the foundation for that pivot.

Relationship Emissary Story Arc
Note It is interesting to note here that this only plays into the Emissary Story Arc, but the reverberations from thread they start here will follow us thru the whole next 6 years.  And besides anytime you get to watch Louise Fletcher as Winn Adami (Vedek Winn) you are sure to have a good time hissing and booing the villian!
She is delicious as the heavy!  Nurse Rachet as a religious spiritual leader, with all her poison.
